Actually I think that the first number counts only professional soldiers. Conscripts and the Defence League have been left out. Otherwise, 60k reserve should be correct.
Latvian reserve probably consists of 8k National Guard, plus 3k reserve.
I’m not sure about Lithuanian numbers. 10k regular soldiers sounds about right, but the reserve doesn’t make sense. 5k volunteers, plus 4k conscripts? I really don’t know.
In any case, the presented data is really inconsistent. I’d regard the Swedish FOI report much better in that regard. Even though that one is also flawed in some ways.
But they do count finnish conscripts as active duty soldiers.
Yeah, like I said – inconsistent.
Polish and Swedish reports have been more accurate.
padaudz kļūdu priekš kantora, kur kļūdas izpērk ar asinīm. LV rezerve nav pa taisno no mūsu konceptuālajiem papīriem paņemta?
Ja ir divi iesaukumi OMD, tad būtu korekti pusi no OMD ieskaitīt regulārajos spēkos – pa pusgadu pacienti ir sasnieguši kondīciju.
Zīmīgi, ka pirmai publiskais FI MI ziņojums. Gaidam MIDDa kārtu.
Mošķis saprata, no kurienes 11000 LV rezerve. 8000 rezerve + 3000 apmācītu rezerves karavīru=11000.
Izskatās, ka FI izlūki pasmēluši info no LV vecās Valsts aizsardzības koncepcijas 🙂
Sorry, bija domāts 8000 zemessargu, protams…..
P.S. Nedaudz pārkarsis saulē mošķis
Dīvaini, ka bildītē nav iekļauta Polija – baltijas teātrī ietilpst labi, kā Dānija

No kurienes Latvijai 72 artilērijas lielgabali?
Tad ieskaita. Savādāk jau nav no kurienes to ciparu ņemt. Kaut gan parasti uzskaiti sāk no 100mm.
2004. gada vasaras sākumā valdība izlēma pirkt pa ls 26,7milj no Vācijas 24gab velkamās haubices. kurš atcerās, kāpēc nenopirka?

To sistēmiski nobremzē.

I’m going to post this here, because the off-topic section seems to fail me constantly.
Anyway, despite the Minister of Defence constantly claiming that there are no cuts and everything is fine, the EDF has decided to lay off up to 200 people. First in line will be the orchestra and chaplan service. Politicians are already complaining, but they reap exactly what they sowed.
I feel bad for all the professional people that are having to face this, but such difficult decisions were pressed on the EDF by those same politicians who are complaining. If the commander of the EDF has to choose between ‘soft values’ or fighting capabilities, he will always choose the latter, because he is responsible for the security and defence of the country. That is what separates our officers from the complainers.

I can only applaud the decision to shrink the orchestra (we have 3 such units at HQ, NG and navy), they have to be uniformed civil servants not full time active duty personnel. Politruks of soul can be civilians as well, anyway they do not represent paganism. No druids, no chaplains.
I think it was a very finely calculated move by the commander. He knew that if he had simply laid off 200 people, nobody would notice or care. However, by laying off the orchestra, the hipocrisy of politicians is laid bare. The cuts are very real, and it should be seen as such, regardless of how politicians try to frame it. You can’t have your cake and eat it.
The EDF will save approximately 1.4 million euros from abolishing the orchestra, but they need to cut roughly 20 million per year. This means that defence capabilities WILL be hit negatively. We will probably have less exercises, worse readiness, less ammunition, very few new capabilities, and barely any significant development of defence. That is the path that the EDF has been pushed up on. Trying to play it off as ‘nothing’ (like our minister) is cynical and stupid.
Actually I always wondered how EDF manages to cope with all tasks having only 3K or so professional soldiers, conscripts aside. It is impossible to cut them more. Mb number of draftees could be smaller.
We don’t have a single fully professional unit. Even the formerly fully professional Scouts Battalion is training a limited number of conscripts now. The simple answer is that there are no shortcuts. Every reduction will be felt somewhere. Fact is that the EDF is trying to squeeze out as much as they can from what they have. Having two brigades and >20k wartime structure is challenging for a small nation like Estonia.
Finland has a fair amount of resources and public support, but even they have had to cut their numbers significantly to have a more realistic force structure and a capable defence force. In the end, it is all about hard choices. That is why I can somewhat understand why Latvia doesn’t want to reinstate conscription – because it wouldn’t be very easy. Planning far ahead and constantly solving problems is difficult, but in the end, it is about doing what is right.
Our “fully professional” single land forces brigade also is not “fully” professional anymore, because now they are struggling to create 3rd infantry battalion (NG) manned by NG part-timers.
I actually like the Norwegian model, and I think it would fit Latvia well. Essentially a mixed force with limited conscription. You employ as many professionals as you can, and then fill the rest with conscripts/reservists. I think you could maintain a full brigade that way. Equip them with proper IFV’s – professional soldiers as the machine crew, and conscripts as the infantry – and I’d say you would have a formidable force.
That is just my opinion though.
Opinions like yours were never discussed publicly in LV. Only decisions announced.
nothing was discussed in LV
LV Orchestras will be the last to go – it was the last functioning service on Titanic after all. All similarities with real life are coincidental.
The minister is being grilled HARD in our parliament right now, but he avoids giving any relevant answers. I think he has earned every last bit of contempt he is receiving right now.
I’m actually kind of glad that the commander of EDF has put him on the spot with those cuts. The commander definitely isn’t going to take this lying down, and he definitely shouldn’t.
Oh, also, the DefMin has just claimed that Latvia might not be participating in the anti-ship missile procurement due to budget constraints. He will receive the official answer soon.
Your defmin is a latvian newsmaker 🙂
Latvia has never participated, according to LV DefMin. Sometimes it makes sense to keep plans to oneself until binding agreements are signed.
Makes sense to drop that procurement as something will need to be cut over here anyway – APCs have higher priority and will consume rising amounts of money due to global price hikes and shortages of raw materials, chips etc
