Although Estonia signed an agreement of common intentions with Finland and Latvia in the spring, Estonia no longer plans to jointly develop armored vehicle. Reaching an agreement on the cost and participation of the Estonian defense industry with the Finnish company Patria turned out to be a problem.

The Defense Forces has more than 100 wheeled armored cars Pasi. The wheel armor takes the soldiers to the front line and is used as a support machine for fire control, as a medical or staff machine, mediated by ‘Aktuaalne kaamera’.

Lieutenant Colonel Tõnis Metjer, a senior staff officer at the General Staff of the Defense Forces, said that the Passes were fit for battle, but the machines were old and many of them had received a lot of water during foreign missions. There they were loaded with patrol equipment and ammunition, so that some Pasil could not withstand the front axle.

‘Currently they have been serving Finland and Estonia for more than 30 years. With old machines, maintenance costs inadvertently increase and there are problems finding spare parts, ‘Metjer explained.

The Defense Forces are satisfied with Pasid.

In April this year, Estonia, Finland and Latvia signed a technical agreement for the development of a new wheeled armored vehicle. The military requirements were agreed. Estonia refused to enter into a research and development agreement with the Finnish Patria plant, where Passports are produced.
The consortium wants to start producing armor in Estonia

‘First of all, we could not agree on the cost of research and development, the target price of the armor, and we also could not agree on the participation of the Estonian defense industry in this armor,’ said Ivar Janson, head of the armored technology category of the Defense Investment Center.

According to Janson, Estonia will remain a party to the technical agreement. Joining a research and development project is also not excluded if the conditions are favorable for Estonia.

According to Jussi Järvinen, President of Patria Land, Estonia is expected to rejoin the project. ‘Patria has been and will continue to be ready to include Estonian companies in the program with the aim of placing the first orders already in 2021. The program will remain open to Estonia and all other countries wishing to join at a later stage, ‘commented Järvinen.

The armored project makes the ears of Estonian defense industry entrepreneurs who want to assemble the armor themselves.

‘We already know today that there are other products on the market – armored vehicles – that meet our requirements and remain in the same price range. Certainly the participation of the defense industry in this future procurement is one of the important evaluation criteria, ‘said Janson.

The question is whether Estonian defense manufacturers could start armor development before 2028, when the Defense Forces need new armor. Secondly, a new defense development plan is yet to be drawn up, in which armored vehicles will have to compete with new capabilities such as coastal and mid-air defense and naval renewal.

nesen vēl lasīju, ka vietējais ražotājs jau miljonu ieguldījis metālapstrādes darba galdos orientējoties uz šo projektu, tākā gan jau viss ir diezgan neatgriezeniski.
žēl, ka igauņi nepiedalās, bet mūsējiem ražotājiem toties paveras lielākas iespējas. un tad priecāsimies, ja igauņi pievienosies vēlāk 🙂

  2. Igauņiem nav pārāk galvā sakāpis – skrūvēt kopā pie sevis mazu partiju (cik viņi pirktu – dažus simtus?) ir ekonomiski ļoti neizdevīgi.
Jāņem vērā, ka viņiem ir ļoti interesanta valdošā koalīcija.

  3. Well, the EDF isn’t in a particular hurry either. They have at least half a decade before they need to start replacing current vehicles. There are still plenty of options on the table. I’m certain that at least two battalions will get new armor eventually. The bigger question is whether the second brigade would also receive armored vehicles. I certainly hope so.

  4. Igauņi nabagi. Nevar atļauties. Mēs bagāti, acīmredzot.
Pozitīvi, ka 2021. gadā jau cerības uz pirmajiem pasūtījumiem, tātad R&D nevilksies gadiem (cerams).
